GLAM Environmental Sustainability Report published

Oxford University’s Gardens, Libraries and Museums have published its 2023-24 annual report on Environmental Sustainability. Providing a summary update on progress against set goals – including net zero carbon and biodiversity net gain by 2035, in line with the university’s sustainability strategy – the report also gives a flavour of upcoming activities.

The financial year of 2023-24 saw institutions within GLAM solidify their individual approaches and the creation of a consolidated GLAM net zero strategy, providing a clear pathway and actions to reduce our carbon footprint. February 2024 saw GLAM create and recruit a GLAM Environmental Sustainability Manager role, demonstrating commitment to the environmental agenda.

Many of the required carbon reduction actions are common across GLAM. Consequently, the GLAM Board has supported embedding these actions across existing committees and groups, to ensure integration within core operations. The key areas of focus are purchased goods and services, energy usage, commercial activities and staff travel – together representing over 90% of GLAM’s carbon footprint.

In the 2023-24 period work has also been undertaken to improve carbon data by creating a carbon data model, included in the report, alongside initial work to explore biodiversity footprint and climate adaptation.
