Welcome to volunteering at the Gardens, Libraries, and Museums (GLAM)
We are very grateful to our volunteers, who help to make our spaces and collections more welcoming, interesting, and open to all. Each year, more than 500 volunteers contribute more than 20,000 hours to helping in public-facing and behind-the-scenes roles across the:
Ashmolean
Bate Collection of Musical Instruments
Botanic Garden and Harcourt Arboretum
History of Science Museum
Museum of Natural History
Pitt Rivers Museum
Weston Library

The Volunteer Service hopes that volunteers enjoy sharing their enthusiasm, building their confidence, developing their skills, and meeting new people in an inspiring, supportive environment.
'Volunteering is a great way to gain experience and a wonderful chance to be part of these exciting museums.'
'Having a bit of specialist knowledge is great, but you don't have to be the best artist or an expert - just come with an open mind and follow your passions!'
' I love the buzz I get when I see visitors learn something new about the exhibits - and when I learn something new myself!'
To give a better sense of who our volunteers are, we asked some of them to choose an object significant to their volunteering and then briefly write about it. Read some of their stories by clicking the link below.
