Collections Teaching and Research Centre

The Collections Teaching and Research Centre (CTRC) is a new facility for staff, students and researchers, significantly extending access to – and care for – Oxford University collections, all in one central space.

The CTRC brings together millions of historic, cultural and scientific objects and specimens from the University’s world-class museum collections. Opening in Michaelmas Term 2026, the creative space supports innovative object-based teaching and unlocks new research opportunities.

Transforming collections care

A woman removes tissue paper from a metal storage drawer, revealing an item of textiles.

Located in central Oxford within the Reuben College building, below the Bodleian’s Radcliffe Science Library and adjacent to the Museum of Natural History and Pitt Rivers Museum, the CTRC brings collections from the University’s four museums together for the first time. Objects from the Ashmolean Museum, History of Science, Museum of Natural History and Pitt Rivers Museum now sit alongside one another.

The CTRC features high-quality collections storage - with bespoke solutions for each unique collection together with modern environmental control systems - to provide optimal conditions for object care. Facilities include special arrangements for textiles, metalwork, sculpture and other mixed media.

Extending teaching and research access

A group of seven people gather around a table, on which there are several textile objects. An eighth person points towards one of the objects.

The Centre supports the expansion of innovative object-based teaching with University collections, transforming teaching opportunities and enhancing learning experiences for students, academics and wider specialist interest groups.

The CTRC is both a physical and virtual hub for researchers, significantly extending access to the University’s internationally important collections, all in one space. The central location enables access to the specialist expertise of curators and conservators nearby.
