GLAM Engaged Research Showcase

The wealth of research taking place across the University’s Gardens, Libraries and Museums (GLAM), plus the exciting opportunities for public engagement with research, were highlighted at the GLAM Engaged Showcase on Wednesday 27 November.

The event, which took place at the Weston Library, highlighted the range of research taking place across GLAM, from anthropology to zoology, and enabled researchers from across the University to discuss opportunities for collaboration and support with curators, conservators, researchers and public engagement staff in GLAM.

The event comprised five short talks, covering topics from the origins of animals and bizarre carnivorous plants to changing 19th-century European attitudes to colour.

Three interactive demonstrations gave guests the chance to listen to and play 3D-printed historic musical instruments, explore the world’s largest collection of astrolabes using the power of Wikidata, and learn how cutting-edge research was used to develop the Gut Wars online game.

Mini guided tours of the Bodleian's Talking Maps exhibition were on offer, alongside an information fair featuring 17 stands highlighting research and public engagement projects, from medieval board games at the History of Science Museum to digital mapping of Roman coin hoards at the Ashmolean Museum. Guests also had the opportunity to try out the Bodleian's hand press and print an A-Z of GLAM research and impact.
