Listening to a talk

Applications are now open for Oxford Cultural Leaders 2022, the acclaimed leadership programme for cultural organisations which has developed a reputation as a vital training ground for senior leaders in the sector. Oxford Cultural Leaders are now welcoming applications for its residential programme in September 2022.

Managing in a tough economic climate will be critical for leaders in the arts and culture as they navigate the years ahead. The sector faces particularly complex challenges with the ‘cost of living crisis’ and greater constraints on funding across the arts, already heavily impacted by the pandemic.

Oxford Cultural Leaders, the acclaimed leadership programme for the cultural sector, will address this challenge in its 2022 programme. Experts from the cultural and business sectors will encourage participants to explore how cultural organisations can address this and other management challenges and to embrace transformational change through entrepreneurial ways of thinking and behaving.

Designed and delivered by Oxford University’s Gardens, Libraries & Museums in partnership with the Saïd Business School, this popular residential programme will take place in Oxford this September, in a 6-day-long, onsite session running from 18 – 23 September 2022.

Applications are now open and due by 27 June 2022.

The programme, now in its eighth year, is specially created for those working in the cultural sector at director or senior management level who want to redefine their identity as leaders and reimagine their institutional vision at a time of increasing challenge for the sector. Oxford Cultural Leaders empowers participants to help their organisations adapt.

Over 100 leaders across the cultural sector have now graduated from the program and now form a dynamic international alumni network who continue to share best practice, support one another’s continued leadership, and develop innovative and transformative partnerships and programmes. Past participants have come from the British Museum, Bletchley Park, Bristol Old Vic, National Portrait Gallery, British Library, English National Ballet, and the Design Museum in the UK as well as from international organisations including Arts Centre Melbourne, the Agency for Art and Culture, Denmark, the Smithsonian, and the Canadian Museum of Natural History.

Participants of the 2022 residential programme will be based in Oxford for 6 days from 18 to 23 September 2022. During the day they’ll get the opportunity to re-examine their approach to leadership through immersive workshops, lectures, panel discussions, provocations, reflective sessions and keynote speeches delivered by cultural sector leaders, business school experts and industry authorities. Sessions will take place in the Saïd Business School and within Oxford University’s Gardens, Libraries and Museums, and Oxford’s Colleges. In the evening participants will experience a taste of college life during their stay in Corpus Christi College’s beautiful accommodation. All spaces are located in central Oxford within walking distance of each other. Throughout, government guidance will be followed to ensure the safety of programme participants and to ensure spaces are Covid-secure.

Throughout the week participants will enjoy dinners, networking opportunities and other unique Oxford experiences such as a city walking tour, gin tasting at Oxford Botanic Garden and behind the scenes museum tours. Critically, the residential course offers the beneficial, in-person interaction that participants really value.

The Oxford Cultural Leaders programme welcomes applications from directors, senior staff and freelancers in the museum and galleries sector as well as from across the cultural sector: in theatre and the performing arts, visual arts, music, film, libraries, cultural & natural heritage, tourism, and the creative industries.

Applications for the residential programme opened in May with a deadline of 27 June 2022.
