Gardens, Libraries and Museums (GLAM) Cultural Sector Talks

GLAM Cultural Sector talks are a series of monthly talks, designed to provide an insight into a range of activity and thinking taking place across the cultural sector.

Open to all staff across GLAM, the talks are free - although booking is recommended.

The majority take place at lunchtime on the third Tuesday of each month in the Headley Lecture Theatre at the Ashmolean. But some events may take place at other times and venues, so do check when you book.

Tuesday 21 January: Addressing Social and Cultural Inclusion

Miranda Stearn, Head of Learning at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, shared insights into how the museum is using partnerships to help address social and cultural inclusion in one of the UK’s most unequal cities.

Wednesday 26 February: Iffley Academy and GLAM Partnership

Tom Procter-Legg, Headteacher at Iffley Academy - an Oxford-based special academy for children and young people with complex special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) - discussed the school's innovative partnership with GLAM, which sees SEND teachers and museum staff working together to co-develop and co-deliver a programme of creative learning opportunities and project work.

Tuesday 17 March, 12.30pm: Decoloniality and University Museums

Dr Laura Van Broekhoven, Director of the Pitt Rivers Museum, will discuss the work the Pitt Rivers is doing to decolonise the museum and rehabilitate more pluriversal knowledges.

This talk has been cancelled. A new date will be confirmed in due course.

Tuesday 24 September, 12.30pm: Creating a culture of inclusion

James Brandon, Diversity & Inclusion Manager at Tate, discussed the innovative approaches being taken by Tate to become a truly inclusive organisation.

Wednesday 2 October, 2pm: Old Roots and New Branches: Liberating Natural History in the Anthropocene

Dr Nicole Heller, Curator of the Anthropocene at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, discussed how the Anthropocene is being used to engage audiences with climate change issues and biodiversity loss.

Tuesday 22 October, 12.30pm: Inclusive cross-cultural and cross-border collaborations

Anaїs Aguerre, Director and Founder of Culture Connect, discussed the importance of developing cross-cultural and cross-border collaborations.

Tuesday 19 November, 12.30pm: Decoloniality and university museums

Tuesday 17 December, 12.30pm: Co-curation and community partnerships

Dr Rebecca Bridgman, Curatorial and Exhibitions Team Manager at Birmingham Museums Trust, shared insights into the work that Birmingham Museums have been doing around community collecting, and the impact this has had on the organisation, audiences and community inclusion.
